Dein Festival-Projekt in zwei Sätzen?

TOKENS: will be performed as a RITUAL of mourning, a funeral of sorts and commemoration for lives lost to COVID. Featuring songs and texts from “TOKENS- A Play on the Plague,“ a musical/opera about the Great Plague of London (also called, “The Poor’s Plague”) which I wrote and produced in 1984-5 when the AIDS/HIV pandemic was killing people in SF, and based on the original storyline, of a family quarantined in their house for forty days and forty nights, TOKENS will be a collaboration with Münster musicians and actors and will take place outside of Pumpenhaus in the middle of the night, lit by torches.

Was hat dich zu diesem Beitrag inspiriert?

Through history plagues have ravaged the poor and challenged humanity and authority. By reviving TOKENS I seek to connect audiences intimately to the feeling of a plague, so that we break through the screen, the pictures on our phones of Intensive Care Units in India and the daily data reports of rates of infection, and bring people closer to what plague has meant since the beginning of time, bodies, burlals; death in person, mouirning. We are privileged and perhaps spiritually impoverished in rich industrialized countries in that we can largely avoid witnessing the results of the pandemic. Through the ritual of TOKENS, death from the pandemic is remembered and lives lost are honored.

Was bedeutet Demokratie für dich?

That no one will have more or less influence than you and that decisions of goverrnment and rights will be decided by a process where the majority will rule but the minority will be protected . Power flows from the governed to the governor, from below to above. Power should stem from the consent of the . governed and that equality of voice is guaranteed. When there is basic inequality, a great separation between rich and poor, democracy cannot function and art cannot be democratic.

Welche Rolle spielt Kunst in einer demokratischen Gesellschaft?

It can raise social consciousness, challenge the status quo and engage communities toward meaningful action. Art can create empathy by presenting different points of view and contrasting messages; hopefully a “truth’ comes from a synthesis;of different opinions, from the questions presented, not from the answers
Art works against democracy Much art comes from an individual vision and not from a democratic process. Artists are benign despots; they have to be to set their vision down. Also the cost of theater, opera, and museums prevents art from reaching most people in the world, especially those who do not live under benign socialism, or who are censored. One other factor in the paradox of art and democracy; when art is democratic it often becomes cheap an dutilitarian, a game show that replaces a string quartet, and so there is the question of popular art vs. the elite. I like the way Peter Brook divided theater into categories: Rough Theater; Deadly Theater; Holy Theater and Immediate Theater. I choose, rough, holy and immediate. Hopefull it speaks to everyone. But when people charge a lot for my work (so I can make good money) then unfortunately, it is dDadly.

COVID has compelled me to learn video and editing. A crude version of film acting which I have never done. It has made performing lonely and technical, narcissistic rather than communal, a one-way monologue with myself in a mirror, rather than a dialogue with a live audience’s heart and emotions. But it has also forced me to learn a new medium, to do take after take, and in that way to be a better artist who can reach more people.
