TOKENS: A Play on the Plague

A ritual: done go the bells of London.

Eine Trauerfeier für die Toten der Pandemie, inspiriert von David Scheins Musical über die Große Pest in London 1665.

Ein Ritual zum Gedenken an all jene, die an Covid-19 gestorben sind. Die Texte entstammen einem Musical, TOKENS: A Play on the Plague, geschrieben 1984 von David Schein, als San Francisco von einer Welle von HIV-Infektionen erschüttert wurde und viele seiner Freunde starben.

Die Große Pest in London wurde auch die “Armenpest” genannt. Jetzt, im zweiten Jahr der Corona-Pandemie, sehen wir, wie ärmere Länder keinen Zugang zu Impfstoffen haben. Das “Recht auf Wahlen” wird bedeutungslos ohne das “Recht auf Leben”. Ohne grundlegende Chancengleichheit, ist Demokratie nu rein intellektuelles Konzept. Die Idee der Staaten, in denen einige Rechte, Gleichheit, Gesundheit, Arbeit haben und andere nicht, steht mit der Demokratie im Widerspruch.

Menschen brauchen Bildung, Gesundheitsfürsorge, Nahrung und ein Dach über dem Kopf, bevor sie die Kraft finden, sich gegen Unterdrückung zu wehren und sich in die Politik einzumischen.

TOKENS greift die Geschichte des Original-Musicals auf: eine arme Familie versucht, während der Großen Pest aus London herauszukommen. Während des Rituals hören Sie viele der Originalsongs und -texte, einige Texte aus der Zeit der Großen Pest in London sowie Texte aus der Zeit der Pest in Hamburg und Danzig, die um 1710 ein Viertel der Bevölkerung umbrachte.

Wir gedenken all jener, die an einer Epidemie gestorben sind.

TOKENS: A Play on the Plague

A ritual: done go the bells of London.

A funeral for those who have died from COVID, based on a musical about Great Plague of London in 1665.

The Ritual will be performed as a FUNERAL for those who have died from CoVid It will use music and texts from a musical theater piece, TOKENS: A Play on the Plague, which I wrote and produced in 1984 when AIDS/HIV was attacking San Francisco and many friends were dying. I wrote the “book” and Candace Natvig and I wrote the music.

The Plague in London was called the “Poor’s Plague.” Now that Covid is ravaging India and poorer countries, again we see that when there a huge separation between rich and poor in the world; the concept of democracy is diluted. This story is happening all over the world right now, proving that Democracy is much more than having an equal voice, it is based on something more basic, the “right to live” which involves basic equality of access to food, shelter, medical care, education, etc.: “Right to Live” comes before having an equal voice in choosing your government. Without a basic equality of life chances…”democracy” is an intellectual concept that involves no real sharing of resources.

Humans need education, healthcare, food and shelter before they can find the power to oppose oppression and to have an effective voice in their government. TOKENS will reference the storyline of the original musical: about a poor family trying to get out of London. The ritual will include many of the original songs and some text, As well texts from the Plagues of Hamburg and Dansk, will integrated into the Ritual. We wish to commemorate all that have died from plague.
